Supernatural beings associated with fertility and nature.
The álfar are a race of supernatural beings in Old Norse belief, traditionally divided into light elves and dark elves. Light elves dwell in Álfheimr and are considered benevolent, while dark elves are associated with the underground.
In skaldic poetry and the Eddas the álfar are frequently mentioned alongside the Æsir, suggesting a high standing in the divine order. They were believed to influence health and harvests and were honoured in dedicated rituals.
