The foremost gods in Old Norse mythology, led by Odin. The Æsir dwell in Ásgarðr.

  • Odin (Óðinn)

    Allfather; god of wisdom, poetry, war, seiðr, and the slain. Son of Borr and Bestla.

  • Thor (Þórr)

    The thunder god; son of Odin by the giantess Jörð. Bears Mjöllnir, the belt Megingjörð, and the iron gauntlets.

  • Tyr (Týr)

    God of war, law, and the oath. Loses his hand when Fenrir is bound with Gleipnir.

  • Baldr (Baldr)

    Son of Odin and Frigg. Slain by his brother Höðr with a shot of mistletoe orchestrated by Loki.

  • Heimdallr (Heimdallr)

    Watchman of the gods at Bifröst. Owns the horn Gjallarhorn and hears grass grow. Father of the three estates in Rígsþula.

  • Bragi (Bragi)

    God of poetry. In Skáldskaparmál he instructs Ægir in the language of verse.

  • Hod (Höðr)

    Blind god who killed Baldr with a mistletoe shaft at Loki's instigation.

  • Vidar (Víðarr)

    The silent god. Son of Odin who avenges his father at Ragnarok by tearing Fenrir apart.

  • Vali (Váli)

    Son of Odin, born to avenge Baldr. Killed Hod when only one day old.

  • Forseti (Forseti)

    Son of Baldr. God of justice with the hall Glitnir, where all disputes are settled.

  • Ullr (Ullr)

    Son of Sif. God of archery, skiing, and oaths. Significant in place names.

  • Hermod (Hermóðr)

    Rode Sleipnir to Hel to attempt to bring Baldr back from the realm of the dead.

  • Hoenir (Hœnir)

    Gave humans understanding. Sent as hostage to the Vanir. Survives Ragnarok.

  • Vili (Vili)

    Odin's brother; took part in slaying Ymir and creating the world. Gave humans wit and the power of movement.

  • Ve (Vé)

    Odin's brother; took part in slaying Ymir. Gave humans speech, hearing, and sight.

  • Magni (Magni)

    Thor's son with Jarnsaxa; possesses extraordinary strength. Lifted Hrungnir's leg off Thor as a three-year-old.

  • Modi (Móði)

    Thor's son; inherits Mjölnir together with Magni after Ragnarok.

  • Lodurr (Lóðurr)

    Gave humans blood and complexion together with Odin and Hoenir. Possibly identical with Loki.

  • Meili (Meili)

    Thor's brother; one of the most thinly attested figures in Norse mythology.
