A man named Mundilferi had children he called Sól and Máni. The gods seized them and set them to drive the courses of the sun and moon. The wolves Sköll and Hati pursue them.

Sá maðr hét Mundilferi er átti tvau börn. Þau váru svá fögr at hann kallaði dóttur sína Sól en son sinn Mána. Þat þótti goðunum ofmetnað, ok tóku þau ok settu á himin. Þau reka þar vagna sólar ok mánaðar.

The man was called Mundilferi and he had two children. They were so beautiful that he named his daughter Sól and his son Máni. The gods considered this presumptuous, and seized them and placed them in the sky. There they drive the courses of the sun and moon.

Úlfar tveir elta sólina. Sá er Sköll heitir hleypr fyrir hana, en sá er Hati heitir er Hróðvitnis sonr, sá hleypr fyrir mánanum ok ætlar hann at ná honum.

Two wolves pursue the sun. The one called Sköll runs before it, and the one called Hati, son of Hróðvitnir, runs before the moon intending to catch it.
