Gangleri asks which god is highest and High answers that it is Allfather, whose twelve names testify to his dominion over all worlds.
Þá mælti Gangleri: 'Hverr er æðstr eða elztr allra goðanna?' Hár segir: 'Hann heitir Alföðr at váru máli, en í Ásgarði fornum átti hann tólf nöfn.'
Then Gangleri said: 'Who is the highest or eldest of all gods?' High says: 'He is called Allfather in our tongue, but in ancient Asgard he had twelve names.'
Hann er kallaðr Alföðr, þvíat hann er faðir allra goðanna. Hann heitir ok Herjaföðr, þvíat hann á alla þá er í val falla. Þriðja nafn er Nikarr eða Hnikuðr; fjórða Fjölnir; fimmta Óski; sétta Ómi; sjunda Bifliðr; átta Svíðarr; níunda Sviðrir; tíunda Viðrir; ellifta Jalg eða Jálkr; tólfa Þrór.
He is called Allfather, because he is the father of all gods. He is also called Herjafadir, because he owns all those who fall in battle. The third name is Nikarr or Hnikudr; the fourth Fjolnir; the fifth Oski; the sixth Omi; the seventh Biflidr; the eighth Svidarr; the ninth Sviðrir; the tenth Viðrir; the eleventh Jalg or Jalkr; the twelfth Thror.
