Nú hefr Snorri sýnt þau háttar er honum þótti þess vert að taka fram í þessum bók. Hann hefr ort þetta kvæði til lofs Hákonar konungs ok Skúla jarls. Þat er hans meining at þeir sem yrkja skáldskapur skuli kunna þessa háttar ok hafa í huga reglurnar er hér eru settar fram.
Now Snorri has shown the metres he considered worth presenting in this book. He has composed this work in praise of King Hákon and Earl Skúli. His intention is that those who compose skaldic poetry should know these metres and keep in mind the rules set forth here.
Þat er fróðleikr ok skáldlist saman er skáld kann bæði at yrkja fagrt ok at fylgja lögmálum háttsins. Hvárttveggja þarf: bæði hugurinn sem sér fagurt ok handlagni sem kann reglurnar. Snorri vill at þetta verk sé til gagns öllum þeim er vilja læra þetta list.
It is learning and skaldic art together when the skald can both compose beautifully and follow the laws of the metre. Both are needed: both the mind that perceives beauty and the craft that knows the rules. Snorri wishes this work to be of use to all those who wish to learn this art.

King Hákon, glorious prince, rules a wide realm and with justice. Earl Skúli, strong and exalted, leads the land and the host of warriors.
