Gold may be called the giants' voice or word, after the myth of Þjazi's sons' mouthfuls (ch. 4). A convoluted verse by Bragi illustrates the principle through a chain of periphrases: stone → the stone's giant → the giant's voice = gold.
Hér má þat heyra, at kallat er orð eða rödd jötna gullit, svá sem fyrr er sagt. Svá kvað Bragi skáld:
Here it may be heard that gold is called the word or voice of the giants, as said before. Thus spoke the skald Bragi:
Hann kallaði stein vasta undirkúlu, en jötun Ála steinsins, en gull rödd jötuns.
He called a stone the whetstone's under-knob, and the giant Áli of the stone, and gold the giant's voice.
