The giant Þjazi forces Loki to lure Iðunn and her apples of youth out of Ásgarðr, causing the gods to age; Loki retrieves her in falcon form, Þjazi pursues in eagle shape and is burned to death by a bonfire.
Óðinn ok Loki ok Hœnir fóru af Ásgarði. Þá er þeir vildu hafa mat, tóku þeir einn uxa ok elduðu. Þá er þeir hugðu at soðit mundi vera, braut náttin upp matinn. Þar sat örn mikill í eik þar nær. Hann sagði at hann gæfi þeim at soðinn yrði ef hann fengi hlut af nautinu. Þeir játtu. Þá tók hann lær báðar ok báðar herðarnar. Loka þótti þat rán. Hann tók staf ok laust örninn.
Odin, Loki, and Hœnir set out from Ásgarðr. When they wanted food they took an ox and built a fire. When they thought the meat should be cooked, the fire had spoiled it. A great eagle sat in an oak nearby. He said he would see to it that the meat cooked if he received a share of the ox. They agreed. Then he took both thighs and both shoulders. Loki thought this robbery. He seized a pole and struck the eagle.
Örninn fló ok tók Loka með sér ok neitaði að sleppa honum nema hann sværi sér eið að hann leiðir Iðunni út ór Ásgarði. Þetta lofaði Loki. Loki fékk Iðunni til þess at ganga út ór Ásgarði ok sagðist hafa fundið epli. Þjazi kom í örn líki ok tók Iðunni ok fló með hana. Þá urðu Æsir gamlir ok hárir. Þeir ráku Loka til þess að fara eftir henni. Hann fékk sér flúgustakk Freyju ok flaug norðr.
The eagle flew off, taking Loki with him, and refused to release him unless he swore an oath to lead Iðunn out of Ásgarðr. Loki swore. He persuaded Iðunn to walk outside Ásgarðr, saying he had found apples. Þjazi came in eagle shape, seized Iðunn, and flew away with her. The Æsir then grew old and grey-haired. They compelled Loki to go and fetch her back. He borrowed Freyja's falcon-cloak and flew north.
