Old age personified, who defeats Thor in wrestling.
Elli (Old Norse Elli, 'old age') is a personification of old age who appears in Gylfaginning 46-47. During Thor's visit to Utgarda-Loki, Thor is challenged to wrestle an old woman named Elli. Despite all his strength, Thor is forced down to one knee. Utgarda-Loki then reveals that Elli was in reality old age itself, which no one can defeat.
The episode is part of a series of deceptions arranged by Utgarda-Loki, in which the gods' strength is tested against cosmic forces disguised as everyday challenges. The Elli scene underscores that old age overcomes all, even the thunder god, and lends the narrative a tragic and philosophical dimension.
