Týr is the bravest of the Æsir. He placed his hand in Fenrir's mouth as a pledge when the wolf was bound. He lost the hand but the world was won. He is called the one-handed god.

There is one among the Æsir called Týr. He is the boldest and bravest, and he governs victory in battles. It is good to pray to him for courage. It is a saying that the man who is bravest is Týs hvatastr. He is also wise, and it is said that the man who is wisest is Týs vísastr. One clear mark of his courage: when the Æsir bound the Fenris-wolf, Týr placed his hand in the wolf's mouth as a pledge, and when Fenrir was bound Týr lost his hand.
