Thor takes part in three contests. He tries to drain a great drinking horn but can barely lower the level, for the horn is connected to the sea. He tries to lift a grey cat but manages only one paw, for the cat is Jörmungandr in disguise. He wrestles the old woman Elli but cannot bring her down, for Elli is old age.
Útgarða-Loki bauð Þór at drekka. Hann fekk honum mikit horn. Þórr drakk ok drakk, en horni hrökk mjök lítit. Sagði Útgarða-Loki at þat þótti lítit.
Útgarða-Loki invited Thor to drink. He gave him a great horn. Thor drank and drank, but the horn sank only very little. Útgarða-Loki said that seemed a small effort.
Þá bauð Útgarða-Loki Þór at lyfta köttu hans. Kötturinn var grár ok mikill. Þórr tók undir miðjan kattinn ok lyfti, en kötturinn beygðist í boga svá sem Þórr lyfti, ok þótt Þórr rétti upp höndina sem hæst, þá lyftist ein fótin af gólfi.
Then Útgarða-Loki invited Thor to lift his cat. The cat was grey and large. Thor took hold under the cat's middle and lifted, but the cat arched as Thor lifted, and though Thor stretched his hand as high as he could, only one paw was raised from the floor.
Þá bauð Útgarða-Loki Þór at fá til glímu við kerling eina, fóstru sína, er Elli hét. Þótti Þór at hún var harðlát við hann, ok því meir sem hann þreifaðist, því fastar stóð hún. Til þess er Þórr fell á kné.
Then Útgarða-Loki invited Thor to wrestle an old woman, his foster-mother, who was called Elli. It seemed to Thor that she was tough against him, and the more he struggled, the more firmly she stood. In the end Thor fell to one knee.
