The company reaches the greatest stronghold they have ever seen and squeezes in through the gate. They meet Útgarða-Loki, who challenges them to contests. Loki competes in eating against Logi and loses, for Logi is wildfire itself consuming meat, bone, and trough alike. Þjálfi runs against Hugi and loses, for Hugi is thought.
Þeir sáu borg á völlum ok þurftu at krjúpa inn um grindina. Útgarða-Loki heilsaði þeim seint ok spurði ef þeir vildu keppa við menn hans í einhverjum leikum, ok sagði at engi mætti þar vera er ekki hafði einhverja list.
They saw a stronghold on the plains and had to crawl in through the gate. Útgarða-Loki greeted them belatedly and asked whether they wished to compete against his men in some sport, saying that none could remain there who lacked some skill.
Loki kvað sér sé svá sólginn at hann mætti þegar eta, ok þótti honum þat keppni. Trogit var lagt á gólfin ok gengr Logi af öðrum enda. Þeir hétu bæði innar at miðjan trogin. Loki hafði etit allt kjötit af beinum, en Logi hafði etit bæði kjötit ok beinin ok trogin með.
Loki said he was so hungry he could eat at once, and this seemed to him a fitting contest. The trough was set on the floor and Logi came from the other end. They both met inside at the middle of the trough. Loki had eaten all the meat from the bones, but Logi had eaten both meat and bones and the trough as well.
Þjálfi var gerr til rás við þann er Hugi hét. Fóru þeir þrjár rásir, ok þótti Útgarða-Loka sem Hugi væri langt fram kominn á hverjum rás.
Þjálfi was set to race against the one called Hugi. They ran three races, and to Útgarða-Loki it seemed that Hugi was far ahead in each race.
