The company travels onward and meets the enormous giant Skrýmir in the forest. They sleep inside what they think is a hall but is in fact a glove. Thor attempts three times to strike Skrýmir with Mjölnir during the night, but the giant merely wakes and asks whether a leaf fell on him.
Þeir fóru um morguninn ok komu í mörk mikla. Þar fundu þeir mann, er lá í skógi. Sá maðr var svá mikill at þeir urðu hræðdir. Hét sá Skrýmir. Hann bauð þeim at fara saman. Um kveldit fann Þórr stórt hús ok gekk inn til náttstaðar.
They traveled in the morning and came to a great forest. There they found a man lying in the wood. That man was so huge that they were afraid. He was called Skrýmir. He offered to travel with them. In the evening Thor found a great house and went inside to lodge for the night.
Um miðja nótt heyrði Þórr at Skrýmir hraut fast. Hann tók Mjölni ok lýstr hann í höfuðit. Skrýmir vaknaði ok spurði hvárr lauf felli ofan í höfuð honum. Þórr laust hann aftr tvisvar, ok svaraði Skrýmir með sama hætti hvern tíma.
In the middle of the night Thor heard Skrýmir snoring loudly. He took Mjölnir and struck the giant on the head. Skrýmir woke and asked whether a leaf had fallen on his head. Thor struck him two more times, and Skrýmir answered the same way each time.
